ADVERTISING BATES GIVEN ON APPLICATION SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Year . . $2.00 . too . .75 . .05 Six Months Three Months Single Copies - Official Paper for Morrow County MEMBER A Visit to the Neighbors. MO ONE could have visited the ' Grant county fair last week end without having gained a good bit of inspiration therefrom as well as having enjoyed the contacts with the good people of Grant county. There was present a spirit the like of which was once equally strong in Morrow county. It is such a spirit as goes with the showing of one's products; a spirit engen dered by wholesome competition in attempting to grow better crops or better livestock than one's neigh bor. It is the spirit of progress and independence. The spirit is not lacking in Mor row county, rather is it lagging. There is need for a means of ex pression such as a county fair pro vides. With such expression the spirit assuredly would be fostered ' and would gain in strength. It was good to see the pride and interest shown by the people of Grant county in the range horse contest sponsored by Oliver broth ers with the announced purpose of building better range livestock for the future, just one of the many ways in which the spirit was ex pressed. An array of beautiful horses it was, of which any commu nity might well be proud. And the zest with which the contestants vied spoke eloquently the determin ation of Grant county people that their fine stock would not only be sustained but improved in the years to come. A step in the right direction is contemplated for next year when it is expected to hold a 4-H club fair in connection with the Rodeo here. It may also be possible to revive the wool and grain show the coming year. And, maybe, within a very few years with the increased state aid now given county fairs it may be possible to have once again a real county fair. In this suggestion there is no idea of replacing the Rodeo or the North Morrow County fair. The Rodeo could be retained in connection with the county fair, and such a fair should but give impetus to the north end fair for it would give people of that section additional op portunity to show their products. And so may we be grateful for the gracious hospitality of Grant county, and for the kind invitation which caused so many of our peo ple to take in Heppner day at John Day on Saturday. A better under standing, and a kindlier feeling cannot help but exist as a result. There is much we may learn from each other, and much that may be NOTICE OF BUDGET MEETING OF THE TAX LEVYING BOARD OF THE CITY OF HEPPNER. (SEAL) accomplished bv working together. Those who went from here were convinced that the John Day high way, the main outlet for folks of the interior, has been sadly ne glected. It is in bad repair for a primary state highway and one of the main arteries in eastern Ore gon. The road is entitled to better treatment at the hands of the state highway commission and should be given immediate attention. The trip across is also convincing as to the wisdom of completing the short gap remaining in the Heppner- Spray road. The promise was had that this would be taken care of this fall and the money was once allotted. Since then there have been two letting of contracts without this gap being included. Time for excuses is past What our people expect is action. IRRIGON MRS. W. C. 1SOM. A good ly supply of moisture is the result, as the snow was very wet and has slowly melted into the ground, thus insuring good conditions for seed ing as well as bringing along the grain already sown. The entire Eight Mile section received about this same amount of snow fall, ac cording to Mr. Fraters, who was looking after some business matters in town todav.
